Newton Stewart is a busy market town in the heart of rural Galloway. It is described as the the gateway to the Galloway Hills and is the perfect base for walking the Southern Upland Way or the hills and forests that dominate the area.

Near by is the 7 Stanes cycling network
at Kirroughtree and Glentrool. The river Cree flows through the town
before making its way to the sea at nearby Creetown. The river is
excellent for fishing as are the numerous lochs and the not too distant
Irish Sea at Portpatrick and Girvan. The area also supports
bird-watching, golf and virtually all outdoor pursuits.
A
short drive brings you to the rugged and scenic shores of the Solway
Firth and the Irish Sea. Cairnryan is a 30-minute drive from where you
can catch a ferry to Belfast or Larne for a day trip to the Emerald Isle.
